Diagnosis begins with a review of the patient's medical history. A history of exposure to asbestos may increase clinical suspicion for mesothelioma. A physical examination is performed, followed by chest X-ray and often lung function tests. The X-ray may reveal pleural thickening commonly seen after asbestos exposure and increases suspicion of mesothelioma. A CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI is usually performed. If a large amount of fluid is present, abnormal cells may be detected by cytology if this fluid is aspirated with a syringe. For pleural fluid this is done by a pleural tap or chest drain, in ascites with an paracentesis or ascitic drain and in a pericardial effusion with pericardiocentesis. While absence of malignant cells on cytology does not completely exclude mesothelioma, it makes it much more unlikely, especially if an alternative diagnosis can be made (e.g. tuberculosis, heart failure).

If cytology is positive or a plaque is regarded as suspicious, a biopsy is needed to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A doctor removes a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope by a pathologist. A biopsy may be done in different ways, depending on where the abnormal area is located. If the cancer is in the chest, the doctor may perform a thoracoscopy. In this procedure, the doctor makes a small cut through the chest wall and puts a thin, lighted tube called a thoracoscope into the chest between two ribs. Thoracoscopy allows the doctor to look inside the chest and obtain tissue samples.

If the cancer is in the abdomen, the doctor may perform a laparoscopy. To obtain tissue for examination, the doctor makes a small incision in the abdomen and inserts a special instrument into the abdominal cavity. If these procedures do not yield enough tissue, more extensive diagnostic surgery may be necessary.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mesothelioma symptoms

The term “Mesothelioma” in medical terms is defined as form of cancer that proliferates at a very fast rate after it has been diagnosed, which affects the mesothelial cells in the body. After detailed study of this disease by several scientists all over the world, it has been concluded that in most of the cases the reason is the direct contact with loose asbestos particles. This disease is generally known to be derived from an abnormality that arises from inhaling the loose asbestos particles suspended in the air for a very long time. The chances of the patients, diagnosed of mesothelioma, have very bleak chances of survival which is not more than one or two years and if it has been detected long back and rigorous medication has been started on the patient then the patient is likely to live for about five years.

There are three types of mesothelioma but the symptoms of the diseases depend on their kinds. The symptoms vary from one-another but the general symptoms that are found in patients suffering from different types of mesothelioma are weight loss, chest pain, loss of appetite, short breath , plain cough and cough with blood. Diagnosing mesothelioma in its initial stages is not possible because symptoms surface very late and that, these symptoms are no special signs indicating the particular disease but are common for other diseases too.

Generally the symptoms of mesothelioma resemble to that to any other normal lung diseases. Most of the symptoms arise in the lungs, where the mesothelial cells covering the lungs and the cavity between them are affected due to prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers. Consulting with the physician is very necessary from time to time and necessary test must be conducted to detect the disease.

The main symptom of mesothelioma is a constant pain in the chest which is followed by short breaths and difficult breathing because of accumulation of fluid in the chest, which makes breathing all the more difficult. Some of the other symptoms of the disease include abnormalities in the lungs, which can be diagnosed under proper supervision of the doctor with a chest CT-scan.

Basically, the disease of mesothelioma advances in four stages. In the first stage, begins the formation of the tumor in the area of lining of the lung and doesn’t exceed from one side of the lung. And then in the second stage the tumor extends to other organs in the chest cavity, such as heart. Then in the third stage its extents to the other abdominal organs affecting all the other organs too. Finally in the fourth and the last stage the tumor extends to all parts of the body and affects all the parts adversely. These are some of the symptoms of the disease of mesothelioma, by which the disease can be tracked in the initial stages of its occurrence.

Pericardial Mesothelioma

This type of mesothelioma attacks the lining surrounding the heart and amounts to around 5% of all cases reported each year. The people who are diagnosed with this disease are typically those who worked long term with asbestos or in buildings that were thick with the material. The prognosis once the disease is discovered in the pericardium is quite grim.

You may have as few as six weeks to live and typically no more than one year. Anyone who had long term exposure to asbestos (10 years or more) should have regular pulmonary checks to rule out the possibility of pericardial mesothelioma. Even though they are similar to the symptoms of many illnesses, you want to get checked out if you have had any exposure to asbestos.
As with all other types of mesothelioma, you may be diagnosed before any symptoms show up but there are symptoms you should look out for anyway, these include:

• Heart palpitations
• Chest pains
• Shortness of breath
• Persistent cough

Pericardial mesothelioma is almost always detected at the more advanced stages. Once detected, there is very little treatment that can be offered and all that can be done is make the patient comfortable by relieving the symptoms. By this point the doctors strive to improve the quality of life left rather than make attempts at false hope of a cure for this most ravaging form of mesothelioma.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

This form of mesothelioma accounts for about 20% of documented cases which makes it considerably more rare than pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining that surrounds the abdominal organs, notably the GI tract. This cancer is contracted by exposure to asbestos, though the route of exposure to tumor is not well known.

There are two major theories as to how the cancer develops in the peritoneal mesothelium. Some researchers think the fibers get cause in mucous in the throat when they are inhaled and are swallowed as an entrance to the GI tract. Other researchers think the fibers may be inhaled to the lungs but travel to the lymphatic systems and transferred to the peritoneal area.

Either way, the fibers cause the cells in the area to behave abnormally and have incredibly long life spans. This causes the formation of tumors in the mesothelium which can spread throughout the peritoneal mesothelium. The cells remain dormant for multiple decades before showing any symptoms of the disease and by then the disease is in its advanced stages.

When symptoms do present themselves they include: abdominal pain and swelling (fluid retention), weight loss, appetite loss, nausea, bowel obstruction, weakness and breathing trouble depending on the size and location of the tumors.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma

Cause of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural Mesothelioma is rare. That is what the people in charge would have you think. If Pleural Mesothelioma is so rare, how do you think, more than 2000 to 3000 new patients are diagnosed every year?

The fact is Pleural Mesothelioma used to be a rare form of cancer which made a symptomatic appearance 30-50 years after exposure to Asbestos. You see the only way to contract Pleural Mesothelioma is by being exposed to Asbestos. Before 1980 there were no laws protecting the workers from Asbestos exposure in the workplace, however, once it was seen that people working in an environment of Asbestos exposure were being diagnosed with Pleural Mesothelioma 30-50 years after their exposure, laws began to change.

Just imagine you work for 30 years in an industry and when you near retirement age you or your loved one contracts Pleural Mesothelioma.

What is Pleural Mesothelioma
Pleural Mesothelioma cancer is a malignant form of cancer found in the sac lining of the abdominal cavity or around the lining of the heart. It’s a fast and deadly cancer as once the symptoms develop it divides at a swift rate and complications are created within a year. The survival rate is nil and the life expectancy once the pleural Mesothelioma cancer develops is hardly two to three years, if you are lucky.

Asbestos Exposure and Pleural Mesothelioma
80% of all Mesothelioma cases are for workers in the asbestos industry. The disease is more common in men between the ages 50 and 70 and is contracted through the occupational hazard.
Most laws emerged but as yet, fail to give complete protection to the workers in the Asbestos industry. People working in shipyards, mines, insulation factories etc are still as viable to get pleural Mesothelioma as they were decades ago. Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma causes death. The fault lies with your employer.

Mesothelioma Resource Online, presents information that will help you understand the disease; its causes, effects and how you can best cope with it. And the statistics are not looking good for UK residents. Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that affects those workers and people who have directly or indirectly inhaled asbestos. A painful disease with devastating long terms effects, mesothelioma is gaining wide coverage due to awareness created in the print and electronic media.

According to the HSE statistics the number of deaths has increased to 1,969 victims in the year 2004 from 153 people that died due to mesothelioma in the year 1969. Within the next 4-8 years it is expected that the deaths will escalate to an estimated 2,450 per year. An alarmingly high increase that should ring alarm bells in the government corridors and medical boards.

The statistical information with regards to mesothelioma and asbestos related deaths are thoroughly verified and checked by HSE using a comprehensive system of records, death certificates and cross-checking cancer registrations. This information is also up on the internet for general public reading and can be easily accessed and downloaded from the HSE website.

According to HSE statistical report, the workers from the following businesses are most vulnerable to asbestos induced cancers. All these industries made extensive use of asbestos fibers before strict rules and regulations were enforced to limit asbestos.
• Construction business
• Energy business
• Water supply business
• Manufacturing business
• Shipbuilding business
• Railway engineering business

You can also find the geographical distribution of mesothelioma deaths in the HSE report, which gives a breakdown of statistics in areas with such high incidence rate of mesothelioma deaths. The reason for such high mesothelioma rates in these locations is due to a large presence of ports, shipyards and dockyards. In Scotland these are some of the geographical locations with high mesothelioma deaths: West Dunbartonshire, East Dunbartonshire, Fife, Glasgow City, Inverclyde and Renfrewshire.

In the North East parts of Great Britain mesothelioma mortalities are usually in:
• Hartlepool
• Middlesbrough
• Redcar
• Cleveland
• Stockton on Tees
• All LAs in Tyne and Wear Metropolitan County
• Blythe Valley in Northumberland

In the South East divisions of Great Britain mesothelioma mortalities are usually in:
• The UAs of Isle of White
• Medway
• Portsmouth
• Southampton
• The LAs of Farehma
• Gosport
• Havant
• New Forest in Hampshire

You can find other geographical locations for increasing mesothelioma mortalities in the detailed and updated HSE report. A major consequence of mesothelioma deaths has been a sharp rise in the number of lawsuits filed by victims and their families to get monetary compensation. Another consequence has been that all the industries are now pumping money in research to find suitable replacements for asbestos fibers. What will this eventually lead to is something to watch out for in the coming years.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Ban on Asbestos

Strong calls are being made in the government lobbies to ban asbestos laden products in countries such as Canada, UK, South Africa and USA. Demands are coming in the form of outright bans, phasing out, placing of stringent rules and limited usage. Despite the persistent calls and known hazards of asbestos these measures will be unsuccessful because of the huge amounts of money involved along with the numerous benefits of asbestos.

The connection of asbestos with huge amounts of money is that it is used in some heavy duty industries in which significant investments are at stake. This investment is done by the industrialists and businessmen that are worth millions of dollars. For instance one heavy duty industry in which asbestos is applied is in the construction and engineering industry.

Construction and Engineering Industry: Asbestos
With new geographical locations being discovered by land surveyors, architects and industrialists, there is tremendous pressure to construct new houses, office buildings and apartment blocks. Besides building new structures, there is a rise in the trend to improve and restore old building structures.
For these buildings asbestos is useful as it is used in roof tiles, floor tiles, geysers, pipe insulation, firebrick, window caulking, duct connections and spray on fire proof insulation. It is also utilized to strengthen the concrete pillars, insulation around boilers and is added in cement mixtures to solidify and reinforce it.

Asbestos Use in the Shipping Industry
Another industry that makes heavy use of asbestos is the shipping industry. The global shipping industry is quite robust and active although it did experience a bit of lull in the interim time period. It is going through a phase of expansion and thus new shipping vessels are being constructed on a massive scale. Shipping is experiencing boom in freight, cruises and oil transportation. It is used to insulate pipes, boilers and engines. All these structures generate a great amount of heat and hence asbestos being heat resistant is used for insulation purposes.

Auto Industry and Asbestos
Asbestos is also used in the auto industry. The industry is involved in the design and production of vehicles. Most of the vehicle makers are located in US, Japan, Germany, Italy, France and South Korea. These vehicle makers make extensive use of asbestos due to its numerous qualities. It has high insulation and tensile strength. A naturally occurring light mineral, it is fire and heat resistant as well. That is why asbestos is used in brake and accelerator pedals, brake pads, clutches and brake drums.

Due to its high usability in crucial heavy industries, it is not possible that asbestos will be completely banned in the world. But it will be continued to be applied in a limited manner as no good substitute has been discovered as yet for asbestos.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Mesothelioma Attorneys - Make your Mesothelioma Claim

Its essential when you are fighting for your life that you get the very best. Yet, while they may seem to be without a conscience the fact is, they give you hope.

If you suffer from mesothelioma because of the negligence of an employer or organization then you are due compensation. No, getting a lawyer will not cure mesothelioma, nor will it alleviate your suffering. However, being compensated for someone's negligence will allow you to ensure that the expensive treatment required for mesothelioma does not alter your life nor the life of your loved ones.

Mesothelioma law is basically about being compensated by the makers and distributors of asbestos. The best way to get compensation is by hiring the right lawyer!
If you want to legally claim that the mesothelioma you or your loved one contracted was a result of exposure to an asbestos zone, you must be able to prove that exposure. Try your best to remember the details of your exposure, the product name, or the location, your lawyers and investigators will get the details all you need to give them is the basics.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Top Treatment centers for mesothelioma in America

As the incidence of mesothelioma is very high in the United States, almost every cancer institute is well equipped to treat mesothelioma. Their survival rate increased by a minimum of 3 months. The two drugs used for the treatment were PEMETREXED and CISPLATIN. The clinical trials were done on 448 mesotheliomic patients.
About 80% of the mesotheliomic patients were men with an average age of 61 years. Some patients received only cisplatin whereas some patients received a combination of pemetrexed, cisplatin, vitamin supplements, folic acid and B12. Not only did their life span increase by three months but also the patients felt less tired, had improved appetite, experienced less pain and had smaller coughing spells. The clinical trial and research was done at the Clatterbridge Center for Oncology in England.

Mesothelioma Research 2
A research published in The New England Journal of Medicine says that researchers in New York University School of Medicine and Wayne State University have discovered a molecular particle that shows the beginnings of pleural mesothelioma. The blood levels of a protein called OSTEOPONTIN rises significantly in patients with early stages of pleural mesothelioma.
This is a breakthrough discovery as it may lead to the development of a blood diagnostic test which can detect the disease pleural mesothelioma in its earliest stages. Currently the patient has to wait for mesothelioma to become a full blown case before it is properly diagnosed. Although it is incurable, the detection of pleural mesothelioma in its earliest stages, will lead to swifter treatment options with the patient having a longer survival rate and a reduced pain free life.

Mesothelioma Research 3
A study conducted by a team of researchers at University of Cincinnati have found that all those workers who used were employed at a Ohio manufacturing plant in Marysville and were exposed to vermiculite ore had abnormally high rates of chest wall lining disfigurement.

Vermiculite ore is known to contain asbestos fibers and exposure to it means that previous workers have a high chance of developing asbestosis, lung diseases and mesothelioma. Because of mesothelioma’s long latency period, researchers will not know about the development of mesothelioma in these people till the next 30-50 years.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Asbestos Lawyers and Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma has been on the rise in recent years. As cases of the disease started to rise, lawyers dealing specially with mesothelioma and asbestos lawsuits have sprung into action. These attorneys and law firms are hired by mesothelioma victims and their families who wish to be compensated by the companies that were responsible for their exposure to asbestos. Asbestos lawyers are capable of getting millions in compensation for victims and their families.

Contacting Asbestos Lawyer
Those who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma are allowed to file a lawsuit. Many companies held accountable for exposing their employees to asbestos were well aware of the hazards and results yet saw it fit to let their workers carry on with little or no protection. Decades later, aftereffect of this exposure is taking its toll on the workers just as they begin to take pleasure in retirement. Somewhat rightly, the workers desire to see justice done in the form of compensation, even though this will never make up for the pain, anguish and failure of life that many of them have been forced to settle for.

Search for a Potential Asbestos Lawyer
Asbestos lawyers have dealt with many mesothelioma and asbestos lawsuits and have a great deal of experience and awareness of the disease. Those looking for asbestos attorneys should shop around for someone having proven experience in the field.
Most well reputed lawyers will be more than happy to offer facts and figures on prior cases. They cannot, certainly, name people and disclose complex details as this would be a breach of confidentiality. They can provide you with details on how rapidly their cases were settled, how much compensation was effectively obtained, and how many mesothelioma lawsuits they have dealt with.

There are many asbestos lawyers around today and most people distressed by asbestos will be capable of finding a practicing asbestos attorney easily. You should do some research on successful cases as well as the unsuccessful ones handled by the law firm that you are considering to hire. Many law firms have established online presence and attorneys are only a toll free call away. Some of these websites also provide information necessary for you to make a decision.
You can even have a free initial consultation or send the law firm an email if you have a question. This will allow you to make an informed decision as to what law firm or attorney you should hire for representing your case. You would have to make this decision based upon the information provided by the attorney or the law firm.

It is vital that you locate a good, experienced asbestos attorney as quickly as possible after you have been diagnosed with an asbestos related disease like mesothelioma. Majority states have a set time limit in which you can file your lawsuit. It is imperative that you not overlook this fact or else you may find out that you are not entitled to file a claim at all.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

How you can lose your legal rights when you get ready to file a mesothelioma lawsuit

If you are someone affected indirectly by asbestos, have worked in a high risk industry and diagnosed with mesothelioma, or lost someone related to you to asbestos related illness, it is your right to seek compensation from those responsible for your situation.

This monetary compensation may be used to pay medical bills and make up for lost income. There are two types of mesothelioma lawsuits, a personal injury claim and a wrongful death lawsuit. In a personal injury claim, the mesothelioma patient files a lawsuit for damages that may include medical expenses, loss of income, and pain and suffering. In a wrongful death suit, the survivor of a mesothelioma fatality files a claim. Laws and procedures are different for each type of claim and depend upon the jurisdiction where the case is filed.

You are likely to lose your legal right when you get ready to file a lawsuit if you do not take the following steps:

• In most states, lawsuits and complaints should be filed within three years after having been diagnosed with mesothelioma. Some other states allow one year within which one can file a lawsuit or complaint. If you delay, you may not be able to file a lawsuit at all.

• If you have not filed a lawsuit or complaint within three years of diagnosis, you have to realize you may lose your right to file one at all. You may have exceeded the time limit for doing so.

• The complaint should be against the manufacturers of asbestos products who were aware of the dangers of asbestos yet failed to warn the public or study their products.

• You should be aware of exactly when and where you were exposed to asbestos.

• There should be evidence of your employment at that location. This could be done by obtaining testimonials of co-workers and other friends who had known you at that location.

• There should be detailed employment records.

• There should be detailed work history records.

• There should be detailed medical records. Medical records should include confirmatory tests for mesothelioma, the extent of damage, the prognosis, and the stage your disease is at. These should include: nature of symptoms that you contend are related to your asbestos related condition, the date you first experienced such symptoms and the date of diagnosis, name of the diagnosing physician, description of any pain, incapacity or inability to lead a normal life as a result of your medical condition, biopsy or tissue sample test results, X-rays and CT Scans, etc.

• You must be ready for an EBT which refers to an examination before trial. An EBT is a process whereby a person with malignant mesothelioma is placed under oath and asked a series of questions concerning background, work history, exposure to asbestos products and other health related matters. The deposition can be made at home or hospital. Failing to make this will render you ineligible to fight for your legal rights.

• You should not have accepted any money from anyone as settlement before the trial begins.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Some trials that failed related to asbestos litigation

Victims of mesothelioma are among the few types of cancer victims that have legal rights associated with the disease. You are well within your rights to sue whoever it was that allowed you to be exposed to the asbestos that caused the mesothelioma to develop. This includes employers, insurance companies and asbestos companies right off the top.

Lawsuits for mesothelioma are often settled out of court for figures that range from the hundreds of thousands to the hundreds of millions depending on how the lawsuit is handled and when it is filed. Often the victim will include the payment of all medical expenses in the settlement because the amount of medical care, medications and treatments needed for mesothelioma patients costs a great deal. There are also many quality of life issues that range from the stress of diagnosis to the physical pain and suffering.

It is important that you know how to properly handle your case and when to file to be sure you do not lose your legal rights when you get ready to file a mesothelioma lawsuit.

Getting Started
If you think you may have mesothelioma the first thing you need to do is get some form of confirmation of the disease from your physician. Without a confirmed diagnosis you have no legal ground to stand on. Your lawyer will give you the details you need to have included in the diagnosis so that your doctor gives you all the information you need to document your case.

Once you have confirmation that you do have mesothelioma, you will need to gather information regarding your exposure to asbestos. In most cases the exposure was over 20 years in the past so it can be hard to track down proof of employment and information linking your exposure to that employment. Lawyers can get this information themselves but it is helpful if you can provide it because that cuts out the time it takes to file the lawsuit. You have to realize that the paperwork has to be filed within 1 to 1 ½ years of diagnosis. If you miss the deadline you risk losing your legal rights to your case and any award that you may be entitled to which would compensate your pain and suffering as well as handle expanding medical bills.

In Case of Death
In some cases mesothelioma is confirmed as the cause after the victim has died. If you are a surviving relative of someone who died due to mesothelioma you have the right to sue for wrongful death. You should ensure that you do not lose your legal rights by filing your claim as soon as you have a confirmed cause of death. It is very important that you file as soon as possible because the statue of limitations on wrongful death lawsuits tends to be quite short. Even if the deadline has passed you should contact a legal representative to discuss your options for paying off medical expenses or other matters relating to the death of your loved one.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Some successful trials related to asbestos litigation

A successful asbestos litigation requires a few important aspects:
• First and foremost, you have to have a confirmed diagnosis of mesothelioma and begin filing within a year. There is a statute of limitations that ranges from 12 to 24 months during which you have to file the claim. After this point you have no legal rights against any company and your case will not likely continue.
• You have to have a dedicated legal team on your side. They must be well versed in mesothelioma law and experienced in prosecuting and settling mesothelioma cases. The team must also understand your individual case and be sympathetic to your suffering, both physical and emotional.
• You have to be able to prove that the mesothelioma you suffer from is a result of negligence of some sort. This can be due to workplace exposure from working at factories, living near a processing plant, living with someone who worked with asbestos or even owning products containing the material. There are a number of bases upon which you can choose to file your mesothelioma litigation.

Successful Litigation Options
Product Liability – you can base your claim on having been exposed to asbestos through the use of products that contained the material. Whether you were exposed through a working or defective product, you will have to prove that your mesothelioma was caused by inhaling or swallowing asbestos fibers from the product.

Professional Negligence – this case can be rather difficult to prove due to the difficulty in diagnosing mesothelioma. Your case would be based on the delay in diagnosis or medical incompetence that resulted in your developing the cancer without knowing until the late stages.

Employer Negligence/Worker’s Compensation – if you were exposed to asbestos on the job you are among the most likely to develop mesothelioma. The company that processed the asbestos or products that used it can be sued by their former employees even if they have gone bankrupt. Companies’ negligence in protecting their workers when they were aware of the dangers of asbestos is the reason they mesothelioma compensation industry is so successful.

Wrongful Death – if you have lost a loved one recently and found out that it was due to mesothelioma you have about a year after the death to file your lawsuit. The best way to go about this type of case is by providing as much information about the victim as possible to get the case moving. A year passes very quickly.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Why do patients with mesothelioma deserve compensation?

Reasons for Patients with mesothelioma deserving compensation

Causes of Mesothelioma
Studies have shown that asbestos is the major cause of mesothelioma. It accounts for about 75 to 80% of all mesothelioma cases in the United States. Asbestos is a naturally occurring substance mined from rocks and made up of tiny fibers used extensively in thousands of building and insulation products. Asbestos can be inhaled or swallowed without immediate or noticeable effect.

After a person is exposed to asbestos fibers in the air, it may be inhaled and become lodged in the lungs causing damage. People exposed to asbestos directly or indirectly are the ones involved in factory work, demolition, insulation, shipbuilding, carpentry, installation of brake linings in vehicles, and many other jobs. Causes of mesothelioma prove that the patient is a victim of circumstances and as such, he is entitled to compensation.

Nature of the disease
Prognosis is generally grim after a diagnosis is made. Median survival period is in the range of only 6 to 18 months and many afflicted are given only supportive treatment which attempts to control the symptoms of pain or shortness of breath. An astounding 50% of the patients who receive only supportive care will die of mesothelioma within 6 to 8 months. By definition, mesothelioma is a permanent disability that results in death. Moreover, there are very few doctors willing to treat the disease.

Many patients and family members retreat into isolation and hopelessness as they attempt to follow their doctor’s advice to get their affairs in order and prepare to die. Fatal nature of the disease highlights the fact that these victims need immediate compensation.

Symptoms and pain
Symptoms of mesothelioma include shortness of breath, pain in the chest or back, or pain or swelling in the abdomen. Minor symptoms include difficulty swallowing, cough, fever, sweating, fatigue, and weight loss. More severe symptoms of pleural mesothelioma include hoarseness, coughing up blood, swelling of the face and arms, muscle weakness, paralysis, and sensory loss.

The patient cannot take a deep breath due to the unrelenting pain as the tumor invades the chest wall and there is an inability to eat or swallow. The physical, medical, emotional, and financial hardship and eventual loss of life suffered by mesothelioma patients and their families is without parallel among diseases attributed to asbestos exposure. This extreme suffering and loss need to be recognized in considering a compensation formula for the victims. Mesothelioma patients experience severe physical suffering and an emotional trauma due to inadequate and uncertain therapies.

Expensive treatment
The best treatment approach is generally considered a tri-modal therapy consisting of surgery to control the disease locally, chemotherapy or other novel drug treatment, and possibly radiation. These intricate surgical procedures are performed by only a handful of surgical specialists in the United States. Unfortunate patients and desperate families must contend with geographical barriers that force them to find the closest institution with specialty care in mesothelioma, causing an immediate financial, psychological, and physical burden. Then there is the frightening question of whether the patient’s insurance carrier will pay for the out of state or out of group treatment necessitated by the lack of local experts. The financial and psychological burdens emphasize that a patient of mesothelioma needs to be compensated.

Accountability of the Government
Understanding the history of asbestos is central to understanding why a Mesothelioma victim is entitled to just compensation for damages. The dangers of asbestos were known as early as the 1930s. Many asbestos manufacturers and corporate users of asbestos materials ignored the scientific data proving the lethal nature of asbestos. In the end, workers who had to work with asbestos were the ones who suffered. Today, those workers have a right to fair compensation for their suffering and health bills.

Accountability of the corporations
Despite the scientific evidence, companies continue to use asbestos as building material and ignore the more expensive safer alternatives. The victims of mesothelioma are largely exploited workers who were unaware of the serious health risks they faced in their working environment. Companies are directly accountable for the incidence of mesothelioma and need to compensate any of their workers who might have contracted the disease while at work.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

What are the motivations to take action when diagnosed with mesothelioma?

Mesothelioma is a rare cancer caused by asbestos, an agent used in many applications especially insulation. It is not easy to detect mesothelioma as it is caused by inhalation of tiny invisible fibers. It is usually diagnosed at an advanced stage which may take about 20 to 50 years to reach but there are always exceptions. If one suspects that he may have mesothelioma, it is best to get it diagnosed as early as possible by a physician. A quick diagnosis is the difference between just waiting for death and living longer.

Motivations to Take Action When Diagnosed with Mesothelioma
When diagnosed with mesothelioma, there are a number of motivations to take action. Depending on the stage of mesothelioma, it is possible to prolong one’s life. There are a number of treatment options available that include surgery, drugs, radiation, and immunotherapy. There are numerous ways to get financial assistance for treatment. Again, a victim of this disease is eligible for legal compensation.

Treatment options
Each person’s experience with mesothelioma is different. Once malignant mesothelioma has been confirmed, the patient’s life is forever altered. Just as the treatment for this disease varies from person to person, so does the coping strategy. But everyone can improve energy level and promote healthy cell growth by getting adequate rest and relaxation, good nutrition, some exercise and some fun. Three kinds of treatment are very common: Surgery, radiation therapy using high dose x-rays or other high-energy rays to kill cancer cells and chemotherapy which uses drugs to fight the cancer.

Surgery is a common treatment option for malignant mesothelioma. The doctor may remove a part of the lining of the chest or abdomen and some of the tissue surrounding it. Sometimes, removal of the lung (pneumonectomy) is performed when the cancer has caused extensive damage. Removing part of the diaphragm is another surgical option.

Radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. Radiation may be used internally by putting radioisotopes inside the cancerous area or externally when radiation from a machine is used on the body. If fluid has collected in the chest or abdomen, the doctor may drain it using thoracentesis or paracentesis. There are drugs that can prevent further fluid from collecting in the chest.

Chemotherapy uses drugs to kill cancer cells. In mesothelioma, chemotherapy may be put directly into the chest. (intrapleural chemotherapy). Intraoperative photodynamic therapy is a new type of treatment that uses special drugs and light to kill cancer cells during surgery. It is important to keep in mind that the treatment option depends on where the cancer is, how far it has spread, the patient’s age and general health.

Financial Options
Huge compensation can be recovered from the asbestos industry which can be made to pay financial security for surviving family members in millions of dollars. Disability claims may be filed if one has such insurance either privately or through an employer. Further disability claims can be filed with the federal social security system. If the asbestos exposure can be linked to a job site, workers compensation can be claimed from the employer.

Legal Options
Mesothelioma lawsuits are handled by law firms free of cost. Because of the aggressive nature of mesothelioma, it is important that the patient and his or her family move quickly to document the facts and circumstances pertaining to the individual’s exposure to asbestos. This includes gathering information on work history, the types and brands of asbestos products encountered in one’s past, different work locations where exposure may have occurred and the names of co-workers. Rules of legal procedure known as the Statute of Limitation require that a claim be filed within a short period of time from the date of diagnosis.

In order to take advantage of treatment, financial, and legal options available, a person diagnosed with mesothelioma should act promptly on all three fronts: physical and mental treatment, financial recovery, and legal compensation.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

How to choose a mesothelioma law firm to represent you in when seeking compensation for asbestos exposure

Quite a few mesothelioma specialist law firms have emerged in the legal arena. Any body suffering from mesothelioma or intimately knows someone who has this disease knows how traumatizing it is physically and mentally.
Hence approaching a law firm requires a lot of effort, time and motivation. You don’t want to waste your time in looking around for law firms who have no idea what they are talking about. Since every minute of the day becomes invaluable for mesotheliomic patients, therefore here are some quick pointers when choosing a law firm to represent you when seeking compensation for asbestos exposure.

Go for a law firm that has a great deal of experience with mesothelioma litigation cases. Refrain from handing in your lawsuit claim to your family lawyer as mesotheliomic cases require special knowledge and expertise.

1. Your lawyer should be able to explain to you the legal language and terminology in simple terms. This is important so that you are aware every step of the way about the proceedings.
2. Your law firm and lawyers should be sensitive and have good listening skills to hear you out thoroughly and in great detail. If you notice that your lawyers are paying cursory attention to your mesothelioma nightmare and are brushing you off, then you should show them the door.
3. Your specialist law firm should give you several legal options to go for. You may either file a claim individually or you may join a group of affected people and file a claim. Your lawyer may suggest that you agree to out of court settlement or participate in a full-fledged legal trial.
4. Your representative law firm should ask you to give them certain work related evidences and medical proofs such as your employment contract, your previous pay slips, your appraisal reports, your medical records, your diagnostic test results, your biopsy reports and your organ tissue analysis results. All this will strengthen your case in a major way.
5. Your lawyer also should clearly tell you all about the expenses that may be involved while dealing with such a type of special legal case. Usually lawyers are paid on a contingency basis and take their fees only if they win the case.

Thus keeping all these pointers in mind, you should hopefully zone in on a decent law firm that can get you adequate compensation for asbestos exposure.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

What Is Asbestos and What are The Associated Risk Factors?

There are several descriptions of asbestos, but the commonly accepted ones describe it as a fibrous mineral that is naturally found in three forms: chrysotile-white in color, amosite-brown in color and crocidolite-blue in color. Asbestos belongs to a family of silicate minerals and its other chemical name is magnesium silicate. It is fibrous in composition as it is made up of thin, thread like fine strands. Asbestos is derived from a group of Greek words in which ‘a’ means not and ‘sbestos’ means flammable.

Asbestos is such a versatile mineral with several incomparable properties that no substitute organic or inorganic mineral has come close to it. The never ending qualities of asbestos include the following:
•inert
•fire-proof
•heat-proof
•chemical resistant
•pliable
•strong
•long-lasting

Because of its multi-faceted characteristics Asbestos has been put to use by the engineering and manufacturing industries in many diverse way such as:
•car brakes
•house roofs
•insulation around boilers
•fabrics
•house hold products
•pipelines installed with insulation asbestos material
•cement mixtures
•cladding

Previously they were also used in toasters, dryers and ironing boards. Now more or less asbestos has been discontinued due to its risk factors. These risk factors are not minor in nature and are quite injurious to anyone who has been in contact with asbestos even for a short time period. What makes the asbestos exposure complicated is that its effects are not immediately noticeable, in fact it starts to manifest itself after 20-30 years. By then it is usually too late. The patient comes down with any of the three types of dangerous diseases and that are usually fatal:

Asbestosis: A high level of exposure to asbestos leads to asbestosis in which lung coverings are damaged of the patient. Asbestosis may be caused due to long-term or short term exposure. Asbestosis is non-malignant meaning not cancerous but there are breathing difficulties and other symptoms associated with respiratory illnesses.

Lung Cancer: When cancerous cells attack the lungs then it is a sure shot sign of lung cancer. Smoking usually causes lung cancer and that is why it is difficult to find out the real cause of lung cancer. As it can be due to smoking or asbestos.

Mesothelioma: This is a rare type of cancer in which malignant cancerous cells live in the tissue membranes of the internal organs. The malignant cells are found in the lining of the lungs and stomach.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Facts you should know and questions you should ask your doctor when you are diagnosed with mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a very rare cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos. This type of cancer can affect various areas of the body cavity lining.
The majority of cases (75%) affect the pleural mesothelium (the lining that surrounds the lungs) because the easiest way for asbestos to enter the body is through your air passages. If the asbestos fibers do not get embedded in your lung cavity and are allowed to travel through the body they can lodge themselves in your peritoneal mesothelium (the lining that surrounds your abdominal organs, your pericardial mesothelium (the lining that surrounds your heart) or any other area of the body that has a mesothelium (though this is quite rare).

If you have been exposed to asbestos, especially from working in jobs that cause direct exposure, you should be checked regularly for any sign of mesothelioma. If you have already been diagnosed with the disease there is some information you should have and you should be prepared to discuss a number of questions with your doctor.

Facts You Should Know about Mesothelioma
Mesothelioma affects about nine people in a million which amounts to over newly diagnosed cases 2,500 each year. The disease has an extended latency period and may not show any symptoms for up to 50 years. This means people who worked in or around asbestos mines or industries during the 1950s to the 1970s are beginning to be diagnosed in large numbers after the beginning of the millennium and the expected peak in new cases should be around 2010. Even though asbestos was banned in the US during the 1980s, there are still thousands of products in use over 25 years later.

It is widely known that industry leaders were aware of the dangers posed by working with asbestos but chose to ignore potential problems. Many cases of mesothelioma could have been avoided with proper safety measures and protective equipment. Business owners looked to profit rather than the safety of the workers and are considered at fault for the illnesses. Many victims have taken the companies to court over the illness and have won multimillion dollar lawsuits when they file their cases within a year or so of diagnosis.

Questions for Your Doctor
When you are ready to discuss your illness with your physician you should have some questions with you. The answers will help you better understand your illness and the treatment options you have ahead of you. These questions include:

•What are the types of malignant mesothelioma?
•How did I get mesothelioma?
•What are the symptoms?
•How is mesothelioma diagnosed?
•What are stages and what are the treatment options for each stage?
•What kinds of treatment options and therapies are available?
•How do I find a doctor or cancer center that specializes in mesothelioma?
•Where can my families and friends go for help to coping with and understanding mesothelioma?

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Experimental therapies that help treat Mesothelioma

There are a number of traditional treatments for patients who have mesothelioma that have varying effectiveness. These include: surgery to remove affected tissue, chemotherapy which uses drugs to combat the disease and radiation therapy whose short treatments can reduce tumor size.
None of these treatments has actually cured the disease, just slowed the process down a little. The idea of a cure is relative with cancer. The term ‘cure’ when describing cancer means that the patient survives more than five years following successful treatment. Experimental therapies that help treat mesothelioma are tested in clinical trials for the possibility of becoming a cure for the disease.

Experimental Therapies
Gene Therapy – cells that have altered genetic material inserted into them attack and kill the cancerous cells. This therapy is one of the most cutting edge of research and is in the early stages of development. It is thought that this therapy can be used alone or in conjunction with other (even traditional) treatments. One potential use for this therapy is to kill the cancer cells that remain in the body after surgery.

Immunotherapy – the body’s immune system is used to fight off cancer cells by using drugs to augment the body’s natural immune response, disable the cancer cells from metastasizing and actually combat the growth of cancerous cells by using cytokines. Cytokines like interferons and interleukins are proteins that occur naturally which behave like hormones which have a specific effect on other cells.

Photodynamic Therapy – you are given a photosensitizing agent that makes the cancer cells sensitive to light (at specific wavelengths) and then fiber optic wires are inserted into your body to focus the light waves. This kills cancer cells and tumors by creating a molecule that is toxic to mesothelioma cells.
Celebrex – this drug that is used for arthritis has shown promise as an agent that inhibits the growth of mesothelioma without inhibiting the growth of normal mesothelial cells.

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) – radiation is focused on the tumor at high intensity without harming the local healthy cells. This can be used on tumors that were previously thought of as being untreatable.

Angiogenesis Therapy – the growth of new blood vessels is stimulated with the use of drugs. These new blood vessels combat the growth of tumors, and in many cases work to shrink the size of the tumors with the healthy blood vessels. The therapy is experimental but promising as a treatment that avoids damaging the body’s normal cells while attacking the mesothelioma.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Conventional therapies that treat Mesothelioma

‘Mesothelioma’ that word in itself conjures up so many horrors associated with it. Devastating, painful, depressing, terrible, awful, bloated, fatigue, hopeless, agonizing and several other similar words emanate from the affected mesotheliomic patients.

For those who are unaware as to what is Mesothelioma, it will be sufficient for them to know that it is basically an unusual type of malignancy, a cancer that affects the thin fragile covering of internal organs, mainly lungs, stomach and the heart.
The person develops this disease when he/she has worked in a place that is filled with asbestos material or fibers. There is no successful cure for this fatal disease. However patients in order to lessen their suffering and prolong their life usually go for the following conventional therapies.

RADIATION THERAPY
Once a person becomes mesotheliomic, then he/she has to often go for radiation therapy, in which radiation is in the form of beams that are transmitted and target specifically the cancerous cells to reduce its size substantially. Because prolonged radiation in itself can cause cancer, therefore radiation treatment is done with extreme care and caution.
Special care is taken that the neighboring healthy cells and tissues remain undamaged. The patients are called for repeated and limited sessions. The sessions usually last from 1-5 minutes. It is highly effective when it comes to destroying mesotheliomic cells and shrinking the size of the malignant tumors.
A mesotheliomic patient will experience quite a few side effects due to radiation therapy such as loss of appetite, anxiety, depression, hair loss, nausea, low blood count, fatigue, diarrhea, mouth sores and skin problems.

CHEMOTHERAPY
In chemotherapy, the mesotheliomic patient is given a concoction of drugs and medication to kill the cancerous cells or to limit their growth to other areas of the body. This is done because cancerous cells have a tendency to multiply really fast and it is imperative that their rapid growth is inhibited as much as possible.
This drugs combination is given by injecting it into the blood of the cancer patient. This drug combination can also do away with healthy cells therefore the cancer specialists have to inject such a combination which can kill as many cancerous cells as possible and fewer healthy cells.
Chemotherapy often leads to a lot of side effects that are quite similar to radiation therapy. Those side effects are hair loss, queasiness, runny motions, likeliness of falling sicker due to low levels of immunity and even fertility is affected.

SURGERY
Surgical removal of the linings of the affected organs or removal of the organ itself is also performed on mesotheliomic patients. The surgeon may remove the mesotheliomic lung, the pleura, diaphragm or the pericardium. However surgery is only done if the mesothelioma is in its beginning stage and the patient is able to climb up and down the stairs without running out of breath.
Radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgery are usually used in a combination to treat the mesothelioma affected patients. It is all dependent on the stages of mesothelioma that a patient has.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Some statistics related to Mesothelioma

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the body cavity lining in various areas. The majority of suffers have pleural mesothelioma which affects the lining in the cavity that surrounds the lungs. Less common mesothelioma types include peritoneal (which affects the lining in the abdominal cavity), pericardial (which affects the lining surrounding the heart) and a few others that are among the rarest known cancers.

The only known cause of mesothelioma is prolonged exposure to asbestos. It is often misdiagnosed and the patient only becomes aware that they have the disease when it has become nearly untreatable. Symptoms often do not show up for 20-50 years and the mimic the symptoms of benign illnesses. Here are some statistics related to mesothelioma:

•About 2,000-3,000 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma each year in the US, that is about nine people per million. The number is expected to rise with the advancement of techniques to diagnose the disease earlier and peak in about 2010. The numbers should then decline because fewer people were exposed after asbestos was banned in the 1980s.

•About 2,000-3,000 people die each year from mesothelioma, some cases are proved to be mesothelioma only post mortem.

•Men are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma (four to one) because they tended to work in factories which contained or processed asbestos.

•People who lived in the vicinity of asbestos mines or processing plants are susceptible to the illness because they may have inhaled fibers from the air.

•People who lived with someone who worked with asbestos or in buildings thick with the material are susceptible to mesothelioma because the fibers came in on clothes or through the building materials.

•About ¾ of all people who have mesothelioma are over the age of 65. It is very rare to have a patient younger than 55 and it is more common in Caucasian Americans than African Americans.

•The average survival time after diagnosis is about one year. Only about 10% of patients live five years or longer after diagnosis.

•People who smoke are 55 times more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma because the two carcinogens in your system make you more susceptible to the formation of malignant tumors.

http://www.mesotheliomaresourceonline.com/

Avoid Further Mesothelioma Injury Through Prompt Treatment

By Peter Lenkefi

Mesothelioma injury can be classified into three main groups, Pleural (chest), Peritoneal (abdominal) and Pericardial (heart). All three types of Mesothelioma injury are mainly cause through exposure to an Asbestos related substance.
Mesothelioma injury arises when the Mesothelioma cells surrounding the lungs, heart, or abdominal organs become cancerous. The Mesothelioma cells change to form nodules, which can then clump together to form a tumor, or tumors around the organ.

In more extreme cases of Mesothelioma Cancer, the Mesothelioma tumor can break through the walls of the organs that it surrounds and cause internal damage to the organ. Also, in some cases the Cancer can travel through the blood stream and affect other organs, not directly surrounded by the original Mesothelioma Cancerous Cells.
The origins of Mesothelioma injury begin when a person is exposed to an asbestos related substance. The person either inhales the Asbestos fibers, or the fibers enter the skin. These fibers either lodge in the lungs, or travel through the body and affect the heart, or abdominal organs.

The bodies natural defense system will attempt to eradicate the fibers from the body, through attempts to expel the fibers. However, some fibers will become lodged in the Mesothelioma cell layers that provide a protective layer around the lungs, heart and abdominal area.

Over time, the Mesothelioma cells surrounding the fibers, can change consistency and become cancerous. It is at this stage that the Mesothelioma injury begins to occur, as it turns into Mesothelioma.
However, Mesothelioma injury also includes the conditional affects that occur as a result of having Mesothelioma Cancer. Some of these conditional affects include, immune deficiency, which can lead to a slow break down of the bodies defense system.
Once the bodies defense system begins to break down the body can become subject to colds and other such illnesses. The overall affects of having Mesothelioma Cancer can lead to an array of Mesothelioma injuries and has the potential to cause major organ failure.

In order to prevent the adverse affects of Mesothelioma injury, Mesothelioma doctors have been implementing various treatments that aim to prevent further damage. Some of these treatments include, surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and immune augmentative therapy.

In regard to Mesothelioma Cancer, Surgery aims to remove the Cancerous Mesothelioma cells, while chemotherapy uses drugs to kill the Cancerous cells. Radiation therapy also aims to eliminate the Mesothelioma cells, while immune augmentative therapy aims to restore the body’s natural immune system to a level in which it can be effective in helping to fight the effects of Mesothelioma Cancer.

All of these treatment methods are aimed at preventing further Mesothelioma injury to the patient. If you, or someone you know, have been diagnosed with Mesothelioma Cancer, ensure that you seek immediate treatment to prevent the affects of Mesothelioma Cancer and to avoid further Mesothelioma injury.
