Diagnosing mesothelioma is often difficult, because the symptoms are similar to those of a number of other conditions. Diagnosis begins with a review of the patient's medical history. A history of exposure to asbestos may increase clinical suspicion for mesothelioma. A physical examination is performed, followed by chest X-ray and often lung function tests. The X-ray may reveal pleural thickening commonly seen after asbestos exposure and increases suspicion of mesothelioma. A CT (or CAT) scan or an MRI is usually performed. If a large amount of fluid is present, abnormal cells may be detected by cytology if this fluid is aspirated with a syringe. For pleural fluid this is done by a pleural tap or chest drain, in ascites with an paracentesis or ascitic drain and in a pericardial effusion with pericardiocentesis. While absence of malignant cells on cytology does not completely exclude mesothelioma, it makes it much more unlikely, especially if an alternative diagnosis can be made (e.g. tuberculosis, heart failure).

If cytology is positive or a plaque is regarded as suspicious, a biopsy is needed to confirm a diagnosis of mesothelioma. A doctor removes a sample of tissue for examination under a microscope by a pathologist. A biopsy may be done in different ways, depending on where the abnormal area is located. If the cancer is in the chest, the doctor may perform a thoracoscopy. In this procedure, the doctor makes a small cut through the chest wall and puts a thin, lighted tube called a thoracoscope into the chest between two ribs. Thoracoscopy allows the doctor to look inside the chest and obtain tissue samples.

If the cancer is in the abdomen, the doctor may perform a laparoscopy. To obtain tissue for examination, the doctor makes a small incision in the abdomen and inserts a special instrument into the abdominal cavity. If these procedures do not yield enough tissue, more extensive diagnostic surgery may be necessary.

The term “Mesothelioma” in medical terms is defined as form of cancer that proliferates at a very fast rate after it has been diagnosed, which affects the mesothelial cells in the body. The symptoms vary from one-another but the general symptoms that are found in patients suffering from different types of mesothelioma are weight loss, chest pain, loss of appetite, short breath , plain cough and cough with blood. Diagnosing mesothelioma in its initial stages is not possible because symptoms surface very late and that, these symptoms are no special signs indicating the particular disease but are common for other diseases too.

Generally the symptoms of mesothelioma resemble to that to any other normal lung diseases. Most of the symptoms arise in the lungs, where the mesothelial cells covering the lungs and the cavity between them are affected due to prolonged inhalation of asbestos fibers. Then in the third stage its extents to the other abdominal organs affecting all the other organs too. Finally in the fourth and the last stage the tumor extends to all parts of the body and affects all the parts adversely. This form of mesothelioma accounts for about 20% of documented cases which makes it considerably more rare than pleural mesothelioma. Peritoneal mesothelioma affects the lining that surrounds the abdominal organs, notably the GI tract. This cancer is contracted by exposure to asbestos, though the route of exposure to tumor is not well known.

There are two major theories as to how the cancer develops in the peritoneal mesothelium. Some researchers think the fibers get cause in mucous in the throat when they are inhaled and are swallowed as an entrance to the GI tract. Other researchers think the fibers may be inhaled to the lungs but travel to the lymphatic systems and transferred to the peritoneal area.

Either way, the fibers cause the cells in the area to behave abnormally and have incredibly long life spans. This causes the formation of tumors in the mesothelium which can spread throughout the peritoneal mesothelium. The cells remain dormant for multiple decades before showing any symptoms of the disease and by then the disease is in its advanced stages.

When symptoms do present themselves they include: abdominal pain and swelling (fluid retention), weight loss, appetite loss, nausea, bowel obstruction, weakness and breathing trouble depending on the size and location of the tumors.

According to Science Daily, an online resource for latest research news, mesothelioma patients who got treated by a combination of 2 drugs had an improved chance of surviving. Their survival rate increased by a minimum of 3 months. The two drugs used for the treatment were PEMETREXED and CISPLATIN. The clinical trials were done on 448 mesotheliomic patients.
About 80% of the mesotheliomic patients were men with an average age of 61 years. Some patients received only cisplatin whereas some patients received a combination of pemetrexed, cisplatin, vitamin supplements, folic acid and B12. Not only did their life span increase by three months but also the patients felt less tired, had improved appetite, experienced less pain and had smaller coughing spells. The clinical trial and research was done at the Clatterbridge Center for Oncology in England.

A research published in The New England Journal of Medicine says that researchers in New York University School of Medicine and Wayne State University have discovered a molecular particle that shows the beginnings of pleural mesothelioma. The blood levels of a protein called OSTEOPONTIN rises significantly in patients with early stages of pleural mesothelioma.
This is a breakthrough discovery as it may lead to the development of a blood diagnostic test which can detect the disease pleural mesothelioma in its earliest stages. Currently the patient has to wait for mesothelioma to become a full blown case before it is properly diagnosed. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the body cavity lining in various areas. •About 2,000-3,000 people die each year from mesothelioma, some cases are proved to be mesothelioma only post mortem.

•Men are at a higher risk of being diagnosed with mesothelioma (four to one) because they tended to work in factories which contained or processed asbestos.

•People who lived in the vicinity of asbestos mines or processing plants are susceptible to the illness because they may have inhaled fibers from the air.

•People who lived with someone who worked with asbestos or in buildings thick with the material are susceptible to mesothelioma because the fibers came in on clothes or through the building materials.

•About ¾ of all people who have mesothelioma are over the age of 65. It is very rare to have a patient younger than 55 and it is more common in Caucasian Americans than African Americans.

•The average survival time after diagnosis is about one year. Only about 10% of patients live five years or longer after diagnosis.

•People who smoke are 55 times more likely to be diagnosed with mesothelioma because the two carcinogens in your system make you more susceptible to the formation of malignant tumors.
